WallpaperDownloader – Download and Manage Desktop Wallpapers

I’ve covered some wallpaper downloaders and managers here before including Random Wallpaper and Desk Changer. But as you probably already know, there is almost always an alternative app, and today we bring you yet another one that is efficient and easy to use. If you haven’t decided on your default wallpaper downloader yet then you should read on.

WallpaperDownloader is an open source Java-based wallpaper downloader that also serves as a wallpaper manager.

It features an intuitive-enough UI with controls that allow you to download wallpapers based on preferred screen resolutions, keywords, image size, and picture providers.

It was built by Eloy García Almadénalso to include the feature to change wallpapers at prescribed intervals, an option to set a default directory for the wallpapers, and notification settings, among other options.

It works beautifully with GNOME, Unity, XFCE, KDE Plasma, and Mate so be rest assured it will work properly with your desktop environment.

Installation is not available with a GUI option yet but it isn’t difficult. Just run your distro-specific command in a new terminal window as given below:

On Debian/Ubuntu and Other Derivatives

$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:eloy-garcia-pca/wallpaperdownloader
$ sudo apt-get update
$ sudo apt install wallpaperdownloader

On Arch Linux / Manjaro/ Antergos

$ yaourt wallpaperdownloader

I warned previously not to close the app while it is running, not knowing there is a “minimize” button on the bottom of the app window.

As the developer, Eloy wrote in the comments section,

If you click on it, the application will go directly to the system tray and will provide an icon to interact with it directly without having the main window visible. It is very handy if you don’t want to have the application messing around the desktop.
