Trojitá – A Fast IMAP Email Client for Linux Desktop

Trojitá Email Client is an Open Source email app that is loyal to open standards and modern technologies and because it uses IMAP, you can view and manipulate your messages as if they are stored locally on your devices while they are actually stored on a mail server.

Don’t be excited yet, though. Trojitá is not the typical email client as it does not support the POP3 protocol, nor does it contain calendar, alarm, and reminder features. All these, it seems to have traded off for its speed.

Trojitá is built with speed as its main purpose and it is able to achieve this feat by not downloading the body of the messages until you open them and then it keeps the read emails for offline browsing.

Trojitá Customization Options Available

  • 3 Layout Options – There are 3 layouts you can choose from. The first is the app’s default view with the message window underneath the mail list; the second with the message window on the right of the mail list; and the third that shows only the message in focus. Test all 3 to know which style fits you best.
  • Flexible UI ComponentsTrojitá is a Qt app so, of course, you can move the panels around to further customize its look.
  • Display Options – You can decide to show only subscribed folders and unread messages among other things. Use the app to find out the rest.

Feature Highlights of Trojita Email Client

  • Portability – Access your mail from anywhere at anytime.
  • Cross Platform – Use Trojitá on your desktop, cell phone, and ERP systems without losing quality and reliability.
  • Efficiency – Conserve your system’s memory, network bandwidth, and CPU usage.

Setup Gmail Account in Trojitá Email Client

When you launch Trojitá for the first time you will need to setup an IMAP account because “Trojitá can’t do much without one”. This is how to add your Gmail account – and this is the part where the app might suck.

Trojitá does not support automatic account configuration so you will need to enter your IMAP and SMTP hostname, port number and encryption level.

Setting for Gmail IMAP:

  • sever: imap.gmail.com
  • port: 993
  • encryption: TLS

Setting for Gmail SMTP:

  • server: smtp.gmail.com
  • port: 465
  • encryption: TLS

After configuration is complete Trojitá will prompt you saying, “the password will be stored in plaintext. Leave it blank for Trojita to prompt when needed”.

Leave it blank and think of it as using Thunderbird’s master password – meaning you will have to enter your password each time you begin a new session.

Would you be using Trojitá? I’m not expecting it to replace your Thunderbird or Hiri, but just know that Ubuntu’s email client is a fork of Trojitá.

  1. No. I don’t think I’ll be trading Thunderbird for this, speed isn’t the most important thing to some people. I prefer security, and personalization of my email client. Plus the fact that there’s not calendaring makes it a non-starter for me. But I give credit where its due, and the developers of this deserve applause for making an email client that’s not only fast but portable from your desktop to your laptop to your tablet / smartphone?…that is truly impressive!

    • Hehe I feel you bro.
Perhaps calendaring will be added in subsequent improvements and speed will be optimized.
I think its best “selling point” is its multi-platform feature.
