I had already written the Top 6 Alternative Evernote (Note Taking) Clients for Linux when I added brief reviews of a handful of other note-taking apps including Boostnote, GitBook Editor, and Typora – which indicates that the Linux market is in no way short of note-taking apps.
But that notwithstanding, I’m happy to introduce another note taking app to our list – Standard Notes.
Standard Notes is a cross-platform electron-based note taking app with emphasis on security, simplicity, and extensibility. It features a minimal design UI, both web and offline access, and automatic sync with no limit on data capacity.
The app promises to provide “a writing experience like no other”. With regards to security, the website reads,
“Your notes are encrypted using your secret key on your device before they’re synced to your online account. No one can decrypt your notes: not us, not your ISP, and not an intrusive government.”
Since you’re the only one who can have access to your account and make sure not to forget your password; because if you do so also would you have lost your encrypted notes. The encryption feature is automatically initiated the moment you begin syncing your notes across platforms.

Standard Notes Extended
Standard Notes offers a pro version for which you can subscribe to by paying $4/month or $36/year. Subscribing will give you access to features which include:
- Automatic note backups to Dropbox and Google Drive.
- Full access to desktop extensions, editors, and themes.
- Version control: revert to older revisions of any of your notes.
Mind you, subscribing for Standard Notes Extended will help the dev team keep the project afloat and hopefully, flourishing. So if you enjoy the service and can afford to subscribe to the extended version then do so.
