LibreOffice recently got a major update in the form of version 7.0 and I must admit, that the Document Foundation is doing an impressive job of maintaining their software’s position as the most sort out for open-source and cross-platform office suite in the market today.
Being a major release, you can trust that there are more updates than can fit in a 10-minute read, but we’ve decided to bring you some feature highlights.
What’s New in LibreOffice 7.0?
LibreOffice 7.0 is a new major release boasting a ton of significant features among which is the new Skia graphics engine for drawing text, images, and shapes in 2D. This feature is now available to LibreOffice users with thanks to AMD for sponsoring the development.
Another significant update is added support for the Open Document Format which LibreOffice uses to save documents. As LibreOffice 7.0 ships with ODF 1.3 support, it allows for OpenPGP-based encryption of XML documents, adding digital signatures, and an overall improvement in handling page elements.
In the UI department, LibreOffice 7.0 ships with new a new icon theme, Sukapura and Neo Colibre for macOS and Windows users respectively. Linux users get to enjoy both themes.
It also ships with new shape options for arrows, icons, diagrams, etc. and support for generating PDFs larger than 500 cm in Draw. Impress has had its templates updated, there now exists soft edge effects for objects, and Flash is no longer support.
Bookmarks can now be displayed in-line in the text and controlled from the Bookmark menu. The writer supports semi-transparent text and its rotated text handling has been improved with automatic height. There are also improvements to auto-correct for several languages, new spreadsheet functions, new config options (e.g. disabling individual info bars), and all scripts are now executed on CPython 3 core commit by default.
LibreOffice 7.0 also has better support for working with Microsoft documents (i.e. .docx, .pptx, and .xlsx) which makes switching between both office suites a lot easier.
