It has been a while since we reviewed any games on FossMint. And even though I don’t know how many of our readers play chess, it is never too late for anyone to learn how to – especially since awesome services like the FICS exist. What, you’ve never heard about it? Read on.
FICS stands for the Free Internet Chess Server and with upwards of 800,000 registered accounts, it is reportedly one of the oldest internet chess servers.
The FICS users have access to several online games not restricted to chess as they include puzzles, tournaments, and analysis all within the browser!
The Free Chess Club web interface gives users access to the FICS where they can play chess anywhere as it eliminates the need to download and install chess clients.
Interested users can also learn to play chess and solve puzzles while participating in tournaments at different levels either with a computer or other users.
The Free Chess Club also serves as a healthy community of chess experts and enthusiasts where information and ideas can be exchanged.
Features in Free Chess Club
- Freeware: Free Chess Club is free for everyone to download and use.
- Open Source: You can deploy the app to Heroku from GitHub.
- Web-Based: Access the Free Chess club right from within your browser.
- Cross-Platform: A beautifully designed desktop app for users who don’t want to be restricted by their browsers.
If you will be restricted by having to play your games in a browser you can grab the Free Chess Club Desktop App for either GNU/Linux, macOS, or Windows.

How many of you play chess? If you don’t will you be willing to learn today or sometime in the future? Perhaps you should try using the FICS and see if it tickles your fancy.
