ClipGrab is an open source download application with which you can search for and download videos from several famous websites like YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo, Dailymotion, etc. It also has an inbuilt video converter to handle formats like MPEG, WMV, and MP3, among others. It features a fairly simple User Interface with a panel to display results of link searches alongside related videos.
You can grab videos either by searching for them within the application or by pasting the video URL into the URL field. You can also download videos in their original format or convert them to other supported formats using the file format drop-down menu (depending on whether the website you’re downloading from allows the option or not).
ClipGrab has support for downloading media files from a long list of websites and you can check them out here.
One good feature ClipGrab has is how it can still download videos from websites that are not officially supported and that is thanks to its automatic site recognition system. You can also download HD videos from sites that stream HD videos e.g. YouTube.
Features in ClipGrab
- FOSS: free to download and use with its open source code available on Launchpad.
- Simple and intuitive UI.
- Automatic site recognition.
- Inbuilt converter.
- Support for WMV, MPEG4, OGG Theora, MP3, and OGG Vorbis.
If you would like to try ClipGrab yourself you can download it by adding its PPA to your repo via the commands. They will work on Linux Mint 13, 17, and 18; and Ubuntu 12.04 to 17.04:
$ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:noobslab/apps $ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install clipgrab
For other Linux distributions, download the tarball and run it.
