We have already covered a good number of text editors so far but it’s been a while since we covered any. Today I decided to do a brief review on one I think is quite well known because it is GitHub’s very own – Atom Text Editor.
Atom is a modern open-source text editor with a focus on extensibility, reliability, beauty, and customization. It was built with HTML, JavaScript, CSS, and Node.js integration and runs on the famous Electron framework.
Features in Atom
Atom is one of those apps for which an exhaustive list of its features will be a pain to make. Apart from all the functionalities that come in a basic text editor, here are some main features:
- FOSS – free and open-source. Contribute to making Atom a better text editor on GitHub.
- Customization – easily make Atom look and feel the way you want it to by tweaking its UI with CSS/Less, HTML and JavaScript.
- Themes – apply any of the 4 pre-installed UI skins and eight syntax themes in both dark and light colors or just install any of the ones made available by the community.
- Packages – extend Atom’s functionality using any of the thousands of open source packages or better still, build yours and even publish it for the community to use.
- GitHub Integration – work and perform all of Git’s commands on Git projects without needing to exit Atom. that includes performing pull requests, branching, staging, e.t.c.
Other main features include a built-in package manager, smart autocompletion, file system browser, complex find and replace, and cross-platform editing right out of the box, so it should come as no surprise why it’s tagged “a hackable text editor for the 21st century“.
